I posted this viral Tiktok about how I truly believed that anyone could find work in Healthcare Administration because there are so many different jobs, roles, and positions that exist in this industry.

To this day, I get the most engagement from this post. Lots of likes and saves, but what blew me away were the comments.

So many people either shared their career success in Healthcare Administration, or shared their career-building frustrations.

And boy, there were a lot of frustrations!

At the time of writing this, there are over 300 comments on this Tiktok! I do my best to respond to as many as I can but, unfortunately, I can’t help every single person because (1) there just isn’t enough time in the day and (2) I don’t have enough bandwidth to provide the support many need to get through this process.

I LOVE when people have questions for me because they’re trying. Many people are stuck and won’t even seek help or advice. They’ll just keep trying to do the same thing over and over again, and then complain about why it’s not working.

Well, you know what they say…

Doing the same thing but expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.

So, if leaving a comment on a Tiktok that came across your feed is your “something different” for the day, I support it!

BUT - I don’t think that your efforts should stop there.

Let me be real…

I’m a late 20-something living in Southern California with my parents to save money. I received full tuition scholarships for both my Bachelor’s degree and my Master’s degree. I’ve had manyyyyy internships and opportunities - some were even self-made. I want to fully acknowledge and recognize that I have certain privileges and liberties that others do not have, did not have, or will not have.

AND, let me also add that your situation does not have to look like mine in order to achieve success or reach our goals.

I’m a firm believer that anybody can achieve anything!

I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the personal privileges that I’ve experienced because it will affect how you achieve your dreams and goals.

With the disclaimers aside, let’s get into it…

How to build a career in Healthcare Administration

For those curious about all the information and all the tea, you can access the version 01 guide HERE on my Beacons store or version 02 HERE on Amazon.

But, in my Substack, I plan to go step by step through this guide and answer any questions or concerns that you may have along the way.

Overall, this is a four-step plan:

  1. REFLECT

  2. RESEARCH

  3. PLAN

  4. APPLY

In all honesty, I would prefer to not use words like “steps” or “plan” because your career goals can evolve and shift over time as you grow in knowledge and exposure. My own career goals have pivoted several times over the last few years, and some pivots were more drastic than others.

So - keep in mind that this is not a plan that you run through once and call it done. This is a plan that you may have to reiterate a few times before landing on a career goal that is suitable for your lifestyle, preferences and personal timeline. And each iteration may even produce different results as a result of new information.

In this article (and in the video above), I will be going over Step #1: REFLECT

Let’s identify your strengths and skills!

Your strengths and skills are SO important to keep top of mind as you walk through your job search journey. Being more familiar with them will ensure that you’ll know how to communicate what you “bring to the table” in a professional setting.

Start with the things that you know (without a shadow of a doubt) you’re good at. Then, dig a little deeper! There are many articles and resources that list out every skill and strength that could ever exist. Use these tools to uncover additional talents - it’s more than likely that all of them won’t fit on your resume, but it can be useful to have some in your back pocket, whether it be for a talking point during the interview or a succinct description for your cover letter.

If you’re having trouble getting started, here’s some questions to get your brain juices flowing:

  1. What do you often receive compliments about/on when in professional settings?

  2. In previous employee reviews, what were the pieces of positive feedback that you received?

  3. What are some skills or talents that come naturally to you?

  4. What aspects (tasks, assignments, duties or responsibilities) of your job/work experience did you enjoy the most?

  5. What do you believe makes you a unique candidate?

  6. If you had to describe yourself in a way that differentiates you from others, what would you say?

  7. Ask your friends/family/colleagues to describe you in three words: what did they say?

  8. If there was/is a skills section on your resume, what would/is listed there?

  9. Think about your biggest, most impressive accomplishments to date. List all the ways that you contributed to each one (if there’s more than one).

  10. Think about your most interesting, eye-opening, or transformative professional experience: What was your role in this experience, and which skills did you utilize at the time?

The main goal of this exercise is to reframe how we think about and approach the entire job search process.

Starting with yourself through this exercise of identifying your strengths and skills forces you to think about the value you’d bring to any employer (who would be lucky to have you btw!). Understandably, it doesn’t take long to start feeling hopeless and desperate in today’s job market.

But, it’s critical to always remember that the job search is a two-way street. You bring your special skills to the table, and the employer has something to offer you in exchange for those skills. If we lose sight of what those special skills are, then how are we going to convince anyone that we’re worth hiring.

This may seem like a lot to do in order to be able to get a job, but my general approach has always been “If I go above and beyond, then they can’t ignore me.”

For most people, the issue is not that you’re under qualified. The issue, oftentimes, is that you’re not effectively and convincingly communicating your value, unique skillset, and past accomplishments. So, this exercise is meant to help you know yourself better so that you can communicate about yourself better.

There is another exercise to be completed in STEP #1: REFLECT…but I’ll save that for the next article!

See you soon!
